AUSTRALASIA BEATS AMERICA.
The latest news to hand shows that tho Americans gavo our players a very hard battle, and, although our team won by three matches to two, tho result was in doubt ' to tho last. Beals Wright gavo a fino display, and, much to tho {surprise of many, reversed the All-England singles result, beating Wilding by three sets to one. It was a caso of two matches to tacll nation, and Australasia depended upon Brookes to win the contest, which ho did. By this win Australasia now qualifies lo moot the British Isles in tho challenge round to-day. Tho Queensland Lawn Tennis Association has come to tho front with a very handsome cup, valued at 75 guineas, for the Australasian Singles, to be played in Brisbane about August. This cup is to bo won outright tho first time. The contest also carries the challonge cup at prosent hold by A. F. Wilding. Local tennis is still being indulged in at several of tho clubs' courts, and • 0110 club last Saturday had an attendance of 50 players. 'Iho keenness ha 1 ! been kept up by the committee arranging matches for the club's players for Iho wliolo of the winter months. Miss Nunnoley, Ficher, and Peacock wero practising at theso courts last Saturday, their beveral fctyled and execution being keenly watched. Peacock's play, although he is out of form, was an object-lesson in itsolf and the masterly manner in which he puts his body weight into his btrokes was generally admired. Peacock, in form, would bo an oyc-opener to those who have never teen his hurricane smashes.
