[BT THLEGP.APH.—IIJE3S ASSOCIATION.] WHANGAEEI, 2Cth February. 1 In the course of a speech on tho Government land proposals laet night, Mr. M'Xab said the question of freehold was not the sole problem confronting the Government. X great difficulty was the pro- - curing of any land at aIL All land taken . from large freehold estates, which was thrown upon the market, would still retain the freehold, and those who got it <• -would still havo freehold rights;. If aiiy person held freehold land to the value of two hundred thousand pounds, ho v/ould have to part with it, and there would bo twenty persona holding freehold property where only one had held it before. Later, in referring to native lands, tho Minister stated that all such lands declared by tho Commianoners to be surplus would be dealt with by legislation, which would make them available for disposal in tho open market without any need of effecting their purchase through the Crown. They would be disposed of under the freehold fyrtem on term? favourable to buyers. CHRISTCHURCH, 20th February.
