Official despatches which have been received at Tokio regarding the operations at Port Arthur describe tunnel mining and counter-mining. The Russians attacked the Japanese miners, and desperate fighting took place in the trenches. Dynamite was used on both sides. Shells from the Japanese guns have disabled the battleship Peresviet, fired another warship, and damaged others. PROGRESS OF THE ASSAULTING FORCES. Renter's Chefoo correspondent states that the Japanese have occupied positions enabling thehi to enter the main eastern forts at Port Arthur at will. STRENGTH OF THE FORCES. (Received November 4, 10.25 a.m.) LONDON, 3rd November. General Stoessel has 7000 men available and the Japanese 50,000. The Japanese think that Laotishan and Tiger's Tail will resist for another month. the operations in manchuria. Japanese Forward movement. LONDON, 3rd November. General Sakharoff reports that the Japanese are making a forward movement against the extreme left wing of General Kuropatkin's army. The Japanese have reoccupied Saudepu, on the Russian right wing. OFFICERS ON PAROLE. (Received November 4, 8.43 a.m.) LONDON, 3rd November. Admiral Wirenius rebuked seven,officers of the Russian cruiser Diana for escaping from Saigon after giving their parole, but subsequently congratulated them on behaving as sailors and officers in applying for active service.
