CELEBRATED CASE REVIVED.

THE DEAN TRIAL. MR. MEAGHER APPLIES FOR REINSTATEMENT. APPLICATION DISMISSED. [press association.] SYDNEY, 3rd November. The celebrated Dean case cropped ud to-day in connection with an applies tion by Mr. Meagher for reinstatement oh the roll of solicitors. , It is now eight and a half years since Mr. Meagher was struck off the roll for the part he played in the case. The Full Court dismissed the application, but informed the applicant that he could again apply for reinstatement eight months hence, when probably he would be readmitted. The Court 1 thought there was something he could still do by way of reparation — he should publicly apologise to Sir Julian Salomons, and he should also publicly express his regret at the way in which he had caused the late Sir William Wmdeyer to be harassed. It was due to the family of the late Judge that some public apology should be made. The trial in 1895 of George Dean on a charge of attempted murder of his wife created a great sensation at the time. Dean 'was convicted, but Mr. Meagher, who had defended the accused, obtained a, reversal of the verdict, on the ground that his client had not had a fair trial and alleging bias on the part of the Judge who heard the "ase, the late Sir William Windeyer. Subsequently, Dean confessed his guilt, and Mr. Meagher, Mr. Crick, and others were tried on a charge of conspiracy, and Dean for perjury. The latter was sentenced to fourteen years' imprisonment, and Mr. Meagher was convicted on the charge of conspiracy. The latter conviction w.as quashed by the Full Court, though Mr. Meagher's name was afterwards removed from the Solicitors' RoU.
