The Victoria Racing Club's Spring Carnival never opened more auspiciously. The weather was perfect, consequently there was a very big crowd of ladies, in addition to the great assemblage of\interState visitors. The gubernatoiial representatives included Lord Northcote, Sir Reginald and Lady Talbot, Sir Harry and Lady Ravson, Lady Plunket, and the Hon. Kathleen Plunket. Along the river he was followed by Blinker, Billingsgate, Koopan, and Demas, with the favourite last. With Lord Fitzroy still leading, the field olosed up as it approached the abattoirs, and on passing the '•beds Sylviinite began to move up rapidly on the outside. Demas led shortly before the straight was reached, but soon gave way, and Lord Fitzroy led into the straight from Sylvanite, Billingsgate, and Koopan. Once fairly turned for home, Sylvanite challenged Lord Fitzroy, and a good race to the post lesulted in the favourite gaining the verdict by half a length, a length and a half between second and third horses. Time, 2min 39 sec. Melbourne Stakes, a. sweepstakes of 15 soys each, with 700 added j second horse to receive 140 and the third 70 soys out of the stake; weight-for-age. One mile and a quarter. Gladsome led by two lengths at the abattoirs from F.J.A. , Canteen, Emir,, and Lord Cardigan. »Emir ran into second place- at the turn, and Canteen also moved up. Gladsome led into the straight from Emir and Lord Cardigan, and eventually wod by three-quarters of a lengtli. Emir, who died away in the straight, finished fourth, and Canteen eighth.
