Two attempts have been made within 48 houi-s to break into a private residence in the Te Aro end of the city. On Friday night one of the male inmates saw a man looking through his bedroom window, the blind of which had not been pulled down, and a few moments afterwards be heard an attempt being mad* to open the kitchen door. The wouldbe burglar was chased, but managed to Scramble over the back fence and evade capture. William Halford, guilty or theft, was remanded for a week for references as to previous character, and Joseph Burnt, charged with the committal of an unnatural offence, was remanded for a week for medical examination. The two heats of the Wellington Navai Artillery's annual cutter rowing race were, got off on Saturday afternoon. The water in the harbour was without a ripple, and some fine racing was witnessed. Petty Officer Griffiths's crew btat Petty Officer Skelton's crew by several lengths j but there was an exciting finish to tho race between tho crews under Petty Officers M'Kay and Francis.
