PERSONAL MATTERS.
Commander and Mrs. Biddlecombe, of Melbourne, and Mr. A. J. Lawrence, of Sydney, arc staying at the Royal Oak Hotel, also Mrs. Watt, of Nelson. Cricketers especially as well as a wide circle of friends will learn with deep regret of the death of Mr. Samuel Parsons, who passed away yesterday in his 31st year. Mr. Parsons was the fourth son of Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Parsons. Mrs. Sherwood, wife of Mr. Sidney Sherwood, Customs Expert, Dunedin, died on Saturday last in Dunedin, after a severe illness. The late Mrs. Skenvood was well known in Nelson and Wellington, where she had numerous friends. She leaves a young family of eight children. It is reported that Mr. Hayes, Head Accountant ia the Tax Department, is to be appointed Commissioner of Taxes, and that Mr. G. F. C. Campbell, for many years Deputy Commissioner of Taxes, will be made Valuer-General. When the Bill separating the two offices is in Committee in the Legislative Council, the Attorney-General will move to substitute the Valuer-General for the Commissioner of Taxes as member of the following Boards : — Government Life Insurance, Native Land Purchase, Government Advances to Settlers, Public Trust Office, and Land Purchase Commissioners. Mr. James Knight, one of the oldest and most respected settlers of the Lower Hutt, died last evening. The deceased arrived in Port Nicholson by the Duke of Roxburgh in February, 1840, and began farming at the Hutt. He was a man of the highest character, and his death, which occurred last night at the age of 72, will be sincerely regretted by all who knew him. For many years he took a keeh interest in local matters, and was a member of several district bodies, including the Hutt Borough Council. Mrs. Knight survives him. There are seven sons and three daughters, a large number of grandchildren and several great grandchildren. The largest estate classified for stamp duty during the present month was that of the late Mr. A. G. Horton, one of the proprietors of the New Zealand Herald, Auckland, 'the amount being £48,395.
