TRAMWAY EMPLOYEES. AN AWKWAKD QUESTION ASKED.
A matter affecting the City Council's Electrical Engineer and the Public Works Committee on the one hand, and the Motormen and Conductors' Union on the other, was before the Trades and LabquT Council last evening. From a report furnished by the Council's representative, it appears that the statements made K> the Trades and Labour Council by She Union are to the following effect : — that the Union has made requests to \he Public Works Committee of the City Council for better conditions, but has Hot yet filed demands; that on a recent date the Electrical Engineer , caused to be put before the employees, for their signature, on coming to work, a paper divided into two columns, "satisfied" *nd "dissartisfied," the firßt purporting to be an acknowledgment of satisfaction with present conditions, the second tin acknowledgment of dissatisfaction; that some of the employees refused to sign, and that some signed under protest ; that the Union objects to such a declaration being required of the men in such circumstances, and objects to a declaration so obtained being put before the Coast in the e,yent of a dispute being filed. In discussing the matter, some members of the Council consider the Engineer's action might be intknklatory, especially in view of the fact that the jiectric tramcar service is young, and that there, are numerous small happenings that may • afford ground for suspension or dismissal. A deputation was Bet up to interview the Public Works Committee of the City Council. Interviewed by a Post "reporter, the Town Clerk (Mr." J. R. Palmer) would not state anything more than that a letter from the employees was now before the City Council's Staff Committee for consideration.
