A MISLEADING LABEL,

♦ Before Dr. M'Arthur, S.M., this morning, James Thomas Pettengill was charged that- on 29th January, at Wellington, y he used on a tin containing goods certain' words tending to mislead persons as to the actual manufacturer or maker. Mr. Young, for defendant, stated that his client, who pleaded Guilty, did nbt ' know that he was breaking the law. Sub-Inspector Wilson stated that defendant had been going from house to house with some stuff in a box called an ■ electric cloth cleaner, two bottles of shot, and some watches. The electric cleaner, which he offered for sale, had a label •which falsely represented it as manufactured in New York. Defendant vended it at Is a tin, with a guess "at the number of shot thrown in, and the winneu of the guessing competition was to receive a silver watch. Two persons guessed the right number of shot, and defendant brought them a child's toy watch. The Government Analyst had stated that the oloth cleaner cost less than one farthing per tin, and consisted of about 60 per cent, of water and 30 per cent. o£ soap, with traces of salt and lime. Defendant—"l will remove with it, here im Court, «ny stain on your clothing." It was remarked that soap had been known to do such tilings before. Dr. MiArthur imposed a fine of £5, with costs £1 4s, ia default one month's imprisonment. A second charge against Pettengill of having obtained 2s from John Black and Is from Geo. Brackenbury by false pretences, was withdrawn. <
