CHARGE OF BIGAMY.
Michael Brennan, who was arrested in Wellington last week by Detective Neill, was at the Magistrate's Court to-day' with having committed bigamy at Wellington on 28th November, 1900, by marrying Agnes Wright. Mr. Wilford appeared for defendant. Inspector Pender called Henry George Wright, of Clyde, Otago, whose »evidence showed that he was married to, Annie Garden 'Campbell, in Melbourne/ in March or April of 1889. He subsequently lived with her in other parts of Victoria and in Dunediri, and separated from her on May, 1898. After that he did not see her again till he met her in Court. There was one child, a girl, issue of the marriage. He went to Clyde after leaving his wife, life with whom he found to be "hell upon earth." In the meantime he had sent her money at intervals—perhaps JS2O to £25 altogether. , Asiied by Mr. Wilford why he left his wife and child to starve, the witness stated that he had no money himself at the time, and she had to pull along as best she could, the same as he did. He had received the letters put in evidence^—alleged to have been written by accused. They purported to come •from one M'Gi»gor, who represented himself to be connected with a Society for the Protection of 1 Women, and who s asked Wright to forward money to Wellington for his wife's support. The Rev. Otho Fitzgerald, of St. Thomas's, Wellington, deposed that he married accused and the woman present in Court, at Wellington on 28th November. Detective Neill also gave evidence. Accused stated that when on being first charged he pleaded guilty, it was not to bigamy, but simply to the act of marrying. Dr. M/Arthur, S.M., committed accused to the Supreme Court for trial, allowing bail in his own bond for £100 and two sureties of £50 each.
