AUSTRALIAN FEDERATION.
[PHESS ASSOCIATION.] SYDNEY, 12th November. The Governor- General of Canada has cabled to ijhe Premier regretting inability to send 'a detachment of troops to the Cooninon.wealth celebrations, and congratulating him on the consummation of union. (Received November 13, 9.8 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. Lord 1 Hopetoun's- carriages and fifteen horses have arrived here. The announcement was made by the Premier last night that the Government intended to send a contingent to take part in the celebrations connected with the inauguration of the Australian Commonwealth. They would, he said, .also have to send same of their Maori warriors, and they "could not do better than place them undetf the command of his colleague, the Hbn. Mr. Carroll. In another part of his passing reference to Federatioja, the Premi&r said that New Zealand had a friendly feeling for Australia. It looked with pleasure on the nation which was to come formally into existence on the Ist of January next The strength, the unity of Australia, was our strength; Australia knew that in this colony she had a friend with power to aid if the necessity arose. But New Zealand still' led, and would still lead. It had always been the case that -insular nations were the most powerful — continental nations never — and under those circumstances \so in New Zealand would bo a strength to our Australian neighbours.
