PETONE BOR O UGH CO UNCIL.
An ordinary meeting of the Petone Borough Council was held last evening. Present— The Mayor (Mr. E. C. Kirk), Councillors Lusty, Nicholson, Baker, Ciislle, Mothes, Perry, Praser, an.d Austin. * Mr. Pownall, as solicitor to Mr. VV. Buick, wrote objecting to the Council's .condition that Mr. Buick should provide drainage connections to each section >f land proposed to- be subdivided, but offering to enter into a bond to provide one connection to each section or group of sections as they may be sold. The Council agreed to accept the bond. With respect to the dispute as to whether Mr. Buick or the Council should foim the roadAvay opposite the public school, the Council agreed to abide by the opinion of Mr. Skerrett, one of several solicitors suggested in the letter. Mr. T. Price was allowed to retain in use that right-of-way on his property in Fitzhe'i'bert-st-reet w«*ich he had laid off without permission, on condition that it be made not less than ten feet wide and asphalted. With respect to a letter from Mr. G. T. London, asking for a slight variation of the building by law, it was decided that no alteration in the operation of the by-law could be allowed. ' , Mr. Alpes wrote complaining of the , practice of shopkeepers hanging goods ion their verandah posts, which caused horses to shy. . The Council decided to restrain the practice as far as possible. Tl?e Wellington, Trotting. Club wrqte notifying that it requires the use of the Recrootdon Groxuid for race meetings on the. 21st and 23rd instants. This letter, as well as one from the Rev. J. D. Russell, asking permission to use the Recreation Ground on 22nd January for a mock military tournament, was referred to the Ground Committee. The Secretary and two members of the local Cycling Club waited upon «■- c Council, and requested that the present training fee of 7s 6d per annum per member be altered to 2s 6d per annum per head up to the full 'membership of the club, whether racing .men or not, every' member of the club to have the right of using the cycle track for training or other purposes. The Council agreed to .the alteration of terms, for the ensuing season, other conditions as to hours and holidays to remain as before. The Foreman reported the repair of the damaged portion of the wharf. The Engineer to the Gear Company had, however, informed him that unless other portions of the wharf were strengthened the next consignment of coals, would be railed out from Wellington. The Foreman was instructed. to carry out all necessary work. It was decided to notify all sports clubs using the Reereatiori>Ground, that Mr. T. Webb is< the Council's eaKetfiker, and his authority- must -be -respected. The Treasurer reported that receipts for the month amounted to £407 ; general account at bank, debit £2065 2s lOd ; Nos. 1 and 2 interest accounts, credit £291 19s 8d and 5555 13s 2d respectively. Accounts were passed for payment amounting to £85 7s 2d.
