LOCAL AND G-J£NJ£RAL. * The Native Minister (Mr. Carroll) returned from Hawke's Bay last night. The Minister for Lands has arranged to visit Levin shortly, for the purpose of earning to a. decision as to the future working of the State * arm. At present there are less than a dozen men employed on the property, . and no. new work is being done. The alteration in. the time-table of the express trains between Wellington and Napier, with the object of reducing the length of the journey, will take effect from Thursday next. The Railway Department has decided, in order to meet the requirements of th© tourist traffic, to run four trains weekly instead of three from Dunedin to Kingston. The speed of the trains between Qtore and Kingston and Invercargill and Kingston is also to be accelerated-. Advices received by the Postal authorities state that the colonial" mails per R.M.S. Rome, which left Melbourne on 26th September, arrived at London on 28th October— due date. Dairy farmers of the Upper and Lower Hutt districts, having requested Mr. E. Nelson, Government Veterinary Surgeon, to deliver a lecture upon "Dairy cattle, their diseases, prevention and treatment," it is understood that with the leave of the Stock Department Mr; Nelson will comply with the request at an early date. It is understood (saya the Christchurch Press) that the Government intends at no distant date to take away the obsolete guns which the E Battery have had for the past twenty years, and more, and replace them with Nordenfeldts. The Government has, to a great extent, recognised the valuable services rendered by Mr. James while in charge of the 'Parliamentary Library. His salary as assistant librarian has been increased to £300 a year, and he is to receive a bonus of £50 for the extra work which he has done during the past six months. The appointment of Chief Parliamentary Librarian, for which applicatibns are to be invited, will probably be made about the end of next month. Sergt. O'Donovan, of the Mount Cook Police Depot, will leave to-morrow for Westporfc in order to relieve Sergt. Derby, who is about to take a" holiday. ' Sergt. O'Donovan will be absent for about three weeks. According to the latest available returns the amount of Defiance buttgr used in Wellington has increased wonderfully. Fresh, pure, and good.
