The retaining wall enclosing tlio battery building in course of erection at Karangahake for the Talisman Consolidated Company collapsed to-day, carrying >yilh it a portion of the framework of the battery building. It is believed tbat the cause was the excessive rain of the past fow months having thoroughly soaked the ground behind the wall. The damage is estimated at£GOO. NAPIER, 26th October. Mr. Coleman, a well-known resident, on behalf of Miss Florence Watt, has purchased and presented to the town two large oil paintings of Mount Cook and the Cathedral Peaks, by Douglas Perrett, with an expression of hope that they will form tho nucleus of a public art gallery. The weather continues so unsettled that tho dates of shearing at early sheds are being postponed. CHRISTCH TJRCH, 26th October. The whole of the Exhibition Buildings in Manchester-street wero finishpd yesterday, and arrangements are almost complole for the.opeuing ceremony ou Thursday, which it is expected will be declared a general holiday.
