WELLINGTON AND DISTRICT HOSPITALS.

« • "The greatest blot upon the" Wellington Hospital," remarks Dr. MacGregor, Inspector of Hospitals and Charitable Institutions, in his annual report just presented to Parliament, "is the kitchen department. It requires reorganising. The Steward has been off duty a good many months on account of ill-health. An excellent suggestion has been made that the Hill wards should revert to their original purpose, and rooms sufficing for the out-patients' department be erected near the Hospital entrance-gate. It is time that a Nurses' Home should be built, thus leaving the nurses' present quarters free to be used as wards, and giving much needed space to hospital requirements. The new operating-room is waiting its furnishings ; they are on the road. Dr. Ewart and Miss Payne devote much time and thought to the technical teaching of the nurses, and succeed in maintaining a high standard of training." With regard tcr the Maslertou Hospital, Dr. MacGregor says it "is in firstrate order, as smart and bright as new paint and general cleanliness can mate it, and Dr. Newall may be proud of his charge." The Otaki Cottage Hospital, he finds,

is well designed, comfortably furnished, I and very well managed! The nursing is good, and the Inspector's only fear ia that Dr. Mason will make the institution too attractive. The South Wairarapa institution is reported to bo all in order barring a cesspool at the rear of the building, Avhich at the time of the visit (Bth March last) was not in a sanitary condition.
