LOCAL AND GENERAL. » An English parcel post mail and a small South Airican mail came to hand by the Gothic yesterday morning. The rain which began to fall on Thursday afternoon last is still with us, the amount registered up till 9 o'clock this morning being 3.28 in. The average rainfall for the whole of April in the city during the past 30 years is 3.52 in. The reservoir at Wainui-o-mata is full to overflowing, and that at Karori rose 10ft through the rainfall of Friday and Saturday. The warship Mohawk is to sail for Westport on Saturday, after which she will pay a visit to the West Coast Sounds and Port Chalmers. The Pylades goes South from v/ellington. On Wednesday the warships will go outside the Heads and have big gun practice. The Hon. J. G. Ward, Minister of Railways and Colonial Secretary, returned to Wellington from the South yesterday. The Victoria College Debating Society held its annual meeting at the Girls' High School on Saturday night. Professor j lUaclaurin presided. The report and bal-ance-sheet were adopted, and the following officers were elected for the ensuing year: — President, Professor Brown; VicePresident, Professor Maclaurin (re-elect-ed) ; Hon. Secretary, Mr. Thompson (reelected) ; Hon. Treasurer, Miss Reed ; Committee, Misses Richmond and Tasker and Messrs. Richmond and Graham. Stainer's " Crucifixion " was sung by the choir of St. Paul's Pro-Cathedral after evening service yesterday. Mr. F. Rowley played the organ music, and the performance of the piece as a whole was very acceptable. A sacred concert was given in the Working Men's Club last night. There was a large attendance, and the programme met with cordial appreciation. The club's orchestra under Mr. M'Glashan played acceptable music. Our readers are reminded by Messrs. J. m H.
