THE MINISTER OF LANDS IN REPLY TO MR. SEDDON. Extract from New Zealand Times of 20th December, 1899. THE MINISTJER OF LANDS' SPEECH. Speaking at a social at Kaiapoi - laet week, the Hon. J. M'Kenzio said the 'Government had made mistakes. He admitted that he himself had mado mistakes, and if he had some of the things to do over again which he had done, he would do them differently. But if he had erred it was not by intuition, and the best of them made mistakes. Three elections had come round, and the Government had a bigger majority than ever. They had too big a majority. He believed that when the House met they would have to tell four or five men to go over to the other side and criticise \heir measures, otherwise they might carry some that would not be healthy. TO THti ELECTORS OF OTAKI. T ADTES and GENTLEMEN -The conM^A test for the Otaki seat is no longer between Mr. W. H. Field and myself Ministers are now striving for my defeat, and will dictate that you shall return their nominee, to increase by one a majority already too large. While I appreciate the compliment they pay me. I consider their interference so unfair and ungenerous that I decline to meet, them on more equal terms, and will invite no other speaker to come to my aid on the platform. I shall fight this second election, as I did the first, single handed, and rely ou you to judge between us. I invite the Premier to affirm or deny from tho platform the statement being made by some of his own suppoi ters, that if I am returned lie will punish the district by depriving it of roada and bridges grants. Supporters of thus Government — The Ministry is n>»t in danger, but your political freedom is. " Be not like dumb, driven cattle." Yours truly, O. B. MORISON. ' OTAKt ELECTION. MR. C. B. MORISON invites the Electors to meet him at UPPER HUTT, THUS (Friday) EVENING, at 8 p.m. TO THE ELECTORS OF OTAKI. LADIES AND GENTLEMEN— Mr. C. 'B. Morison's last supplication for votes is published. He even beseeches Liberal electors to change their politics and so cast the interests of the district to the winds, in order that he may occupy the seat which less than a month, ago was lost by him and won fairly and honourably by the Liberal Party. It seems some of you have had the temerity in the exercise of your common rights to ask two Ministers of the Crown to address you. My opponent has been for months past attacking the Government, and in particular the Premier, in the most violent terms. Can he complain if the Government venture to reply? For my own part I would have been prepared to fight Mr. Morison unassisted) but the fact that I have had only a fortnight to conduct a campaign upon which he has been engaged daily for many months would have justified me in seeking some assistance. 1 have never before heard of the Government's dire threat to punish the dis trict, as suggested, if it "rats" anc lapses back into Opposition rule, of which it has already had long and bitter ex perience. My opponent need have no fear of th( Liberal electors being dumb on Saturda3 next. He will, I fancy, find them speak ing to some purpose. Faithfully yours, W. H. FIELD. OTAKI ELECTION. MR. FIELD will address the Electors a TAWA FLAT, TO-NIGHT (Fri day), sth January, at 8 o'clock. MR. FIELD desires his Committees a the various centres to meet him at the con elusion of his addresses.
