Women and boys are still taking a spirited part in the defence of Mafeking, where the > siege operations are weakening. , HARDSHIPS AND RISKS OF THE , GARRISON. i SURRENDER NoFeVEN THOUGHT OF. (Per s.s. Moravian at Melbourne.) 1 (Received December 27, 10 a.m.) MAFEKING, 20th November. The shell fire of the enemy has done I comoarative'ly little damage. The Boers continue to sap the approach to the town by parallel trenches. Up to to-day bur dead number 2 officers and 17 men, while over 35 brave fellows are wounded. For a month we have lived under ground 1 in cellars and in bomb-proof shelters. 1 During the day the streets are rendered 1 dangerous, as the enemy have a siege gun 1 and a battery of seven guns. ' There is, be it observed, no question of • surrender, but the siege of Mafeking is ■ to-day no laughifig matter, either to its ■ inhabitants or to "the soldiecs who defend it. Day and night Mauser bullets whistle through the streets, while great sheila 6 • inches in diameter and 23 inches in length hustle overhead, wrecking buildings where they strike, amd striking without discrimination even the hospital the convent, ' and at times the women's laager, so closely is the enemy investing üb.
