OTHER COLONIAL TROOPS.
THE AUSTRALIAN BATTALION. > CAPETOWN, 9th December. The Colonial Infantry Battalion — consisting of the Canadian, Victorian, South Australian, and Tasmanian contingentsarrived safely at the Orange river, and on Thursday started northward along the main line towards Kimberley for the iront. Captain Lascelles, formerly aide-de-camp to Lord Tennyson, Governor of Soutl Australia., has been appointed adjutant to the Colonial Battalion. The detachment of the New South Wales Lancers under Lieutenant Osborne, who are witn Lord Methuen's, army on the western frontier, drew the enemy's fire while on a reconnoitring expedition on Monday eight miles north-east of the Modder river. The troop retired on finding that the Boerß were posted in a strong position. The Imperial staff officers are delighted at the efficiency of the colonial troops. CAPETOWN, 10th December. Major Umphelby, of the Victoria forces, has been appointed to the staff at Capetown, and goes to the front. The New South Wales troops which arrived by tho Aberdeen have been despatched northward to the Modder river.
