Pedestrianism.
The English Amateur Walking Champion, Mr. W. J. Sturgess (says our London correspondent) gave a splendid exhibition of fair heol and too progression when competing in the Hackney Athletic Association Eight Miles Open Road Walk, last Saturday afternoon. The course chosen, four miles out and home, between the Lord Brooke Hotel, at Haokney, and Warren House Farm, contained a fair amount of uphill stretches, and in parts the road surface is rather slack, but Sturgess completed the diatanoe in 60min 1 4-osec. -This performance has never been equalled so far as I know, but the Amateur Athletic Association does not recognise road records in connection with walking. Sturgess's fellow clubman, J. Butler, of the Polytechnic, waß only beaten by 200 yards by the champion, and as he had an allowance of 5£ minutes, he was an easy winner On the handicap.
