The excursion train from Wellington, taking tbe Right Hon. Mr. Seddon, the Hon. Captain Russell, Mr. Rolleston, and a large number of other legislators, their friends, press representatives, and the public, arrived in Woodville at 2 p.m. The weather is splendid. Excursion trains also arrived from Napier and Palmerston. Woodville is filled with strangers for the opening ceremony. His Excellency the Governor is also present, and the town is en f&te. When nearing Pahiatua the Wellington train struck some heavy obstacle on the line and the whole train was badly shaken, one window broken, and the rear wheel of the guard's van derailed. The van dragged for almost a mile before the train could be •topped, owing to the people rushing to the •windows and waving handkerchiefs, &<:., which prevented the driver from seeing the guard's signal. When the train was stopped the damaged van was left behind.

At a committee meeting of tbe Philanthropic Society held yesterday Miss Murphy was temporarily appointed secrefary. A meeting of all members and subscribers will shortly, be contenvened, through the columns of the Post, for the purpose of selecting the permanent secretary. Acting-Detective Broberg concluded a smart piece of investigation which resulted in the arrest at Lyttelton this morning of Daniel Hurley, "boots" on the Tarawera. It appears that Mr. Neave, of Christchurch, had given a porter his portmanteau to take to the Tarawera when she lay at Wellington wharf on Thursday, and the porter left it on deck. From that moment the article went winning. Detective Broberg found it in a pawnshop, whither, it is alleged, the accused took it. Hurley has been remanded to Wellington,
