THE LOCAL OPTION POLLS

* To a certain section of the community the results of the local option poll through- • out the colony came rather as a surprise. All along the line the supporters of a continuance of the present state of affairs have been — so far as we have yet heard — successful. This remark is applicable also to the Clutha Prohibition district. The alteration of the electoral boundaries placed one licensed house, within this Prohibition district, and the question at issue here was whether Prohibition was to continue or whether this one house was to be allowed to' exist in their district. The struggle was keen, and the Prohibitionists could not carry the day. The reduction vote was carried, however, and, in a case where there is only *■ one 'hotel, is as effective as carrying Prohibition, for the one hotel has to be reduced ■ to nil. So Prohibition again reigns in Clutha for. three years. Regarding the calculations to be made as to the effect of j the local option polling in the different electorates, these are not so elaborate as our Returning Officer friend of Saturday seemed to fear. ' In the first place, half the electors on the roil have to vote before the poll is valid ; then a bare majority of all voters who recorded their votes will carry the poll either for reduction pr for a continuance of the present state of things ; a three-fifths majority of all the voters whose votes were recorded will carry prohibition. This appears simple enough when looked into carefully. THE WELLINGTON SUBURBS RETURN The return for this district was made up this morning, and is as follows :
