SPORTING. WELLINGTON RACING CLUB'S SPRING MEETING.
The firgt day's raoing of the Spring Meeting of the local olub yeßterday at the Hntt proved very successful. The attendanoe inoreased aa the day wore on, and at one time 2000 peraona were present, including a large number of the fair sex, many of whom wore handsome summer costumes. The lawn and surroundings looked beautiful, and reflected credit on the oaretaker, Mr. C. White. Besides the Government House party, the offioera of the Italian man-o'-war, Cristoforo Colombo, and members of Bland Holt's company were amongst the visitors. Ihe management of the meeting was all that could be desired, and .Mr. H. M. Lyon, the Seoretary, deserves a word of praise for his arrangements. Mr. J. Pringle, the newly-appointed starter, was fairly successful, but there was rather mnoh delay on two occasions - in the Hurdle and Shorts Handicaps— when the starting maohinea were not available. Three machines were used in starting the various races, but it is hard to say which one carried off the palm, although Murtagh's patent, used in starting the Maiden Plate and Welter Handicap, appeared to be the one which came in for most praise. The amount handled by Messrs. J. Ames and Co. at the totalisators was £365 in excess of last year's total for the corresponding day, .£4703 passing through yesterday, as against .£4338 Minifie'a String Band was in attendance, aud enlivened the proceedings by playing selections on the lawn. Some exciting contests were witnessed, and there was only one easy victory in the iiay's programme that of Tutanekai in the Haok Race. Not a single favourite waa successful, and punters had a very rough time of it. Substantial dividends were paid out on eaoh race, the smallest (J63 15s) being oa the Maiden Plate, in which only three horses competed. Ihe handicapper, Mr. J. 0. i vett, deserves praise for his adjustments. The prinoip&l event fell to Mr. J. H. Proaaer's freldmg The Miser, who is trained on the Porirua beach. His victory was well received, as Mr. Prosser is a popnlar and straight-going sportsman, but he was rather lui-ky in gaining the prize, for if The febrew had not lost so mnoh ground at the fltnrt she muHt have won. Aa it waß, she ran second. The Maiden Plate fell to Leda, owned by a local sportsman— a patron of W. Davis' stable — and she proved herself a game little mare. Mr. P. F. Tanored, of the Wairarapa, also succeeded in winning a race— the Shorts Handicap— by the aid of his fine Foreßter gelding King's Bowman; while another Wairaiapa owner, Mr. Wi Hutana, was successful in appropriating the Welter Handicap with Prince Cole.
