FABLE COMPETITION. The New Hen.
By " Conviva." Very highly commended. , A hen, becoming dissatisfied with her ' lot, complained to Jupiter that she did not : see why she should not be dressed as well ■ as the cockerels, and become possessed of an ' equally melodious voice. "For," said she, ' " I am as good as they, yet I have to wear plain clothes, and can do nothing but ; cackle. To please her, Jupiter gave her i the wished-for voice and plumage. The ' next week her corpse was adorning a poulterer's window. Moral—" It's a good : wind that blows nobody ill." i N.B. — This fable has nothing to do with the New Woman.
