VITAL STATISTICS.

The Regißtrar-Gcnornl's return of vital statistics for tho month of July gives the number of births and deaths and proportion of deaths to 1000 of population as folio w« for the several boroughs :—

Tho total births in the above boroughs amonnted to 365, against 377 in July, a decrease of 12 The deaths in August were 192, an increase of 45 on tho number in July. Of the total deaths males contributed 99, females 93. Fifty of tho deaths were of ohildren under 6 years of age, being 26"04 per cent, of the whole number j 30 of these were under 1 year of ago. Tbere wore 43 deaths of persons of 65 years and upwards : eight mep of 65, 71, 74, 7ti, 77, 84 (two), 92, aiid eight women of 65 (two), 69 (two), 76, 78, 79, 85, died at Auckland ; tour men of 74, 75, 78 (two), and four women of 65 (two), 79, hi, ac Wellington j five men of 65. 66, 75 (two), 77, and three women of 66, 70, 72, at Chtistchurch ; seven men of 65 (two), 67, 73, 75, 76, 82, and four women of 65, 07, 70, 74, at Dunedin. In tho four chief towns and their suburbs the deaths in August from specifio febrile and zymotio diseases numbered 19, 7 of whioh were from influenza— 4 at Wellington, 2 at Christohuroh, and 1 at Dunedin. At Wellington, 3 deaths from diphtheria are notioed, all of ohildren. From diarrhoea there were also 3 deaths— 2 at Auokland and 1 at Chri&toluroh. One death occurred from typhoid fever at Auokland, aud 1 from whooping cough at Wellington. The above, with 1 death from intermittent fever, another from erysipelas,and 2 from puerperal Bepticsemia, complete tho total. From constitutional dißeasos the number of deaths was 37 in August, against 39 in July. Phthisis caused 16, and other tubercular diseases 9 deaths. Deaths from canoor numbered 7, the disease being found in the throat (two cases), brain, rectum, liver, stomaoh, and womb. One death resulted from diabetcß. Local Diseases.— Diseases of the nervous system caused 21 deaths, including 4 from apoplexy and 4 from paialyeis. From disoases of tbe circulatory system tbe deaths wero 22 The mortality lrom diseases of the respiratory organs was Jar heavier in August (49 deaths) than in July (26 deaths). Of 49 deaths from bronohitis, pneumonia, &c, in August, no loss than 21 were at Auokland, and the sime number at Wellington, whilo there wero only three deaths from these complaints at Cbristahurch, and 4 at Dunedin. Diseases of the digestive system contributed 9 deaths, the urinary system 6, the reproductive systems 3, the locomotive and integument try system 1 eaoh. Of 9 deaths ftom violence 7 were accidental and 2 suicidal. A girl was killed by a stone falling on her, and a child by scalding; a mau was found drowned, and a woman died from the effects of a fall ; a labouror lost his life from frostbite followed by tetanus, another from cold and exposure when intoiio.ited ; while an infant died from difficult birth. A labourer &hot himself, and a hotelkeeper out his throat.
