STAR BOATING CLUB.
* The 28th annual meeting of the above Club was held at, the boatshed last evening. The President (Mr. Edward Pearco) occupied tho chair, and£there was, as usual, a large attendance of members. The following new members wore elected : —Active— Messrs. G. B. Miller, H. H. Daore, J. Coates, H. E. Morrah, H. G. Anderson, W. Coath, G. Williams, W. J. Hanlon, H. A. Bligh, S. S. Hume, E. C. Crawford, J. G. Stott, G. M. Kebbell, D. Whitehouse, E. J. Harrison, C. F. Minnitt H. J. Phillips, F. B. Muir, E. C. Bigg, j! W. Fleetwood, J. L. Haselden, J. Mooller, and F. Harcourt. Honorary — Messrs. J. Mackio and W. W. Bain. The annual report and balance-sheet were taken as read. The Chairman moved their adoption. They boro evidence of progress, and showed that tho financial position was steadily improving. A reduction had been made in the liabilities, in the paying off of £100 of the debentures. That record of the year's operations from a financial poms of view was exceedingly gratifying. The motion was seconded by Mr W H Field, Captain of the Clnb, who said that with regard to a complaint made about damage to tho plant, if members used ordinary care there would be no neod for tho6e complaints. Thongh there was ample material for carrying through the coming season, in order to provide for contingencies tho Committoe had thoughfc.it better to got an additional stock of oars, scalls, Ac. Mr. B. M. Tolhurst thought that as the membership was increasing rapidly the committee, instead of devoting surplus funds towards paying off debentures, which now represented only a email liability, should spend a sum of at least £50 in increasing tho plant. Mr. J. E. Smith advocated providing tho caretaker with a cottage on the Club's grounds, so that he would always be on the premises. Mr. A. S. Biss suggested the appointment ot an assistant oustodian should bo taken into consideration by the incoming committee. Af tor some further disoussion the report and balance-sheet wore adoptod. The meeting thon • proceeded to elect officers for the ensuing year.
Mr. Edward Pearce was re-eleoted to the position of President for the 12th successive year, amidst much cheering 1 . In reply, Mr. Pearce said he valued the petition very highly, and whatever assistance he could continue to render the club he would give with pleasure. . , „ . . Mr. W. H. Field was re-elected Captain of the olub, the members oheering him heartily. Mr. Field expressed his gratitude, saying that this was the fifth year of his oloction, and he was afraid it mußt be the last. There were two candidates for the position of Deputy-Captain, Messrs. J. C. MarHn and A. W. Newton, A good-humoured contest resulted in the election of Mr. J. O. Martin. „ , , Mr. C. Poarco was elected f-Ycrctary to the Club (vice Mr. G. H. Bctbune), and Mr. >Y. H. Tho question of arranging details ana fixing the dato of tho opening of tho boating Boason was relegated to tho incoming Com""a "motion by Mr. E. M. Tolburst, that it be a direction to the inooming Committee to procure two double-soulling Btump outngged praotioo boats during the ensuing season, was lost. Tho Committee was recommended to consider the advisableness of furnishing Bomo means of evening ontertainment at the olubroom. , „. Tho Captain moved, That a sum of £35 bo appropriated out of tho olub funds for the purchase of some article for presentation to Mr. G. H. Bethuno, in recognition of his three years' services as Secretary." Mr. Field said they all regretted Mr. Bethuno s retirement, and the causes wbioh had led to it, and Bympathißed with him in bis rooent bereavement. He had proved himself to bo a most enorgetio and efficient officer, and had done a great deal to promote the interests of the club. Mr. N. Galbraith seconded the motion. Mr. Bethune said ho would very muoh prefer that simply a vote of thanks was passed, and that the remainder of the motion should be withdrawn. (" N0..") Whatever he had done for the" olab he had done with pleasure, and he was afraid that the value of his services had been vory much exaggerated, and theme rendered by the Captain and other mombors with whom ho had been associated had been Bomewhat overlooked. The motion was carried unanimously, tho members giving three hearty cheers for Mr. Betbnne and singing " For he's a jolly good fellow." Mr. W. P. James was eleoted an active lifo member of the club, in recognition of 21 years' membership and service in the club. Tho Committee was recommended to procure a bost-and-bost outrigged racing four from Home ; also photographs of all the past captains, for tho clubroom. Votes of thanks woro passed to tho retiring officers, and to tho President for presiding. __^^_______ — __
