Tho Hutt County Connoil mot this morn- " ing. Present— Councillor Cook (Chairman), • J. Wakeham, C. W. Brown, D. Speedy, W. •Jillett, F. A. Majendie, H. A. Field, F. Bradey, and G. Brown. Arohdeaoon Fanoonrt wrote calling attention to the faot that there was no publio oemotery at Tawa Flat. There was a small burial ground attached to the Churoh of England, and this was being rapidly filled up. During tbe laat 27 years almost everyone dying in tbe distriot had been bnried in it. Now that the Porirua Asylum was open many burials might be expected from thoro, and it was high timo a publio cemetery waa established. Ho therefore gave notice thut the private cemetery of the Churoh of England would be closed after 31at December next, thus allowing ample time to make other arrangements. Councillor Majendie said ho had consulted Arobdeacon Fanoourt ••and Father Lano, and both were anxious that ■a publio cemetery should be established. As ■the Government hod 600 acroa of land around ttho Porirua Asylum, no doubt it would grant 'tho nooeasary land. There was no publio •cemetery at Johnsonville oither— merely a ipriv.ito burial ground. Councillors Jillett, Bradey, and Majondie wore appointed a com-'-mittee to wait on tho Government with re1 f eronoo to the matter. . Mr. J.O'Donovan, Returning: Officer at the • late liconsing election, wrote forwarding '-accounts in connection with it. His deputies had all worked in a very satisfactory 1 manner, and ho had heard no complaints of irregularity. Statements had been made in " the press that preference should havo been -■given in selecting deputies to peraons out of ; -employment. Eleven of thoao selooted by "&im had no other employment at tho time, but offjeienoy was tho first point for consideration. Tho cost oFtbo poll waa £15 less than at tho genoral oleotion, and this notwithstanding that railway fares, printing of ballot-papers, Rtationery, A.0., were not froo on this occasion. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr. O' Donovan for tho efficient manner in whioh he had conducted the election. In acknowledging the vote , Mr O'Donovan suggested that in future similar elections the sorvices of the officers of the local authorities might be utilised aa doputy returning officers. The coat of tbe election •was £68. On tho motion of Councillor Bradoy, it wag resolved that a return of the slaughtering licenses and foes and the number of •stook slaughtered during the year ending -31st March bo fnrnished. The Chairman • said ho did not bolie ye the Council at presont reoeivod a third of the fees it should re1 oeive for tbe atook slaughtered. Mr. Soanlon wrote asking tho Counoil to 1 take*, under tho Public Works Act, a road to . his aeorion (57) in the Porir 1a Riding. — To -lie on thi table. . Mr. W. H. Cruiokshank and Mr. W. H. F. liong wrote applying for liceasoa to slaughter stook at seotion 29, Kaitawa. and on the § remises recently oooupled by Mr. Evans on le Ngahauranga line, respectively. — Neither applicant bad complied with the conditions as to advertising, and the commuaioation* wore merely " reoeived." On the motion of Councillor Cook, seconded by Councillor Jillott, it was resolved that the special order levying a Bpeoial rate for tho payment of interest on No. 1 Loan, Whareroa Riding, bo oounrmod. On tho motion of Councillor Spoedy, Rcoonded by Councillor Wakeham, it was resolved that the question of surveying a road through certain sections in Belmont be loft in the hands of Councillor Speedy, and that an applioation be sent to the birvey Department to have the road made. It was resolved that a deputation—con■sisting of the Chairman, Councillors Brown, "Speedy, Field, and tho Road Inspector— "wait upon the Government and request a ■sufficient sum to complete No. 3 contraot op "the Hutt-Waikanae-road, On the motion of Councillor Cook, seoon"dod by Councillor Field, it was resolvod . that the neoessary steps should bo taken to take the proposed road through Messrs. Lyttoh's property in Whareroa Riding under 4)te Pnbho Works Aot. The proposed road would oonneot two existing distriot roads. Tho Chairman agreed with Councillor Field that the necessary fonoing should not come out of the ordinary revenue of the distriot. A loan of .£250 has alroady been agreed to for tho making of the road. The Horowhenua County Chairman wrote in reference to the request pf the Hutt County to co-operato in obtaining .£SO from the Government 111 1 be spent on the county rood botween Te Horo and Puraparaumu, stating that, as there was no chance of tho Government doing anything in tho matter, it was not worth while moving in it.—Retjoived. The Road Inspector reported that tho chief work of tho month had been the getting out and breaking of metal for winter use. On the 27th ultimo the Hutt river was in flood, and enoroached further at the Silvorstream broakwater. Two piles were brokon off and five others were rotten and wonld go •with the next flood, while the river was outting into the bank below the railway bridge. A chain of faecine and embankment, to cost •bout .£22, was there required. A nuisance —as being oaused by a drain at one of Mr. Gutter's houses at Ngahauranga. Mr. Futtor ■contended that tho Council should put a •oulvert through tho road. Mr. P. N. 'Cameron's slaughtering license should be granted, provided he ereoted a larger building. The tender of John Till for No. 2 contraot, Akatarawa-road, had been accepted. The other tender was from Eobinson and M'Crosaan, for -6175. A proposal to raise J81550 for roads in tho Whareroa Ridinir had been rejeoted. Kates colleoted during the month amounted to -5403, or .£4OOO sinoe the middle of last September. Two tenders had been received for the frrmation of nine ohains and metalling eight ohaina in the Upper Hutt, viz., Robinson and M'Crossan, £19 10a (accepted) ; L O'Connor, .£24, The report was adopted.
