The Cost of an Exhibition.
According to a aorr*spondent of the Washington Star, they aro paying rather dearly in Chicago for their magnifii ont World's Fair, whioh has left the oity in a deplorable economic condition. It is estimated that there are 175,000 men idle, ' praotiaally on the streets of the town." Those include all classes, so that "men in patent leather shoes and Bilk hats havo been put to work as labourers on the drainage canal and in cleansing tho streets; and I venture to fay that every profession is represented by the men who hr.ye thus been given an opportunity to earn a bare subsistence" As a result, crime stalks abroad in the city. " A man whoso appearance is in any way prosperous displays his wisdom in walking through tho darkor streets of Chicago at night by taking the middle of Ihe road, with a gun of largo calibre in his right-hand overcoat pocket, ready for u^e ; and thousands of the most solid nit zens of Chicago aro carefully following this rule for -elf-preseiyation." The Mayor is trying to drive tho indigent out of tho city, regardloss, apparently, of what is to become of them.
