BRITISH POLITICS. ENQUIRY AS TO THE IRISH LAND ACT.

The seoession of the Parnellites and the Healy Bootion is serionaly weakening the Government in connection with the debate on the scheme for the Sootoh Grand Committee. The following Committee has been set up to enquire into the working of the Irish Land Aot :— Eight Hon. John Morley (L), Mr. T. M. Healy (N), Mr. IS. Carson (C), Mr. Thos. Sexton (N), Mr. J. L. "Wharton (O), Mr. J. A. Wilcox (C), Mr. T. W. Russell (L U), Mr. E. F. V. Knox(N). In the election tor the Middle Division of Lanarkshire, Mr. Caldwell, the Liberal candidate, was returned by a majority of 330 votes. [There has hitherto been no announcement of a vacancy for Mid-Lanarkshire, Trhicli was represented by Mr. J. Wynford Philipps (L), whose majority at the general election was 1522.J The East London Water Bill has been read a second time in the House of Commons by a majority of one vote. Ministers opposed the measure.
