DISASTROUS FIRE AT HOKITIKA.

A WOMAN BURNED TO DEATH. A fire took place in Sewell-street, Hokitika, last Tuesday morning, and resulted in the destruction of two cottages, one owned by Mrs. Bassettand oocupied by Mrs. Richard, and tho other owned and .occupied by Mr. H'Namara. Mrs. Kichard, an old lady of 70 years, was burnt to death in her house. Her remains were afterwards discovered. The body was much charred and burned, and was on what had been a feather bed. The limbs were straight, the body being on its ■ide, and it was evident that death ensued from suffocation before the danger could have been known. Tho deceased was an old resident of Koas, where she bad resided for a number of years with her husband, who was a carrier. She was a martyr to rheumatics and had been unwell for somo time past, but, though somewhat feeble, was able to be about.
