" House Asent," Otaki. — We do not know -what is usual, but it seems a very reasonable thing to do. You had bettor communicate with the Education Board if you desire further information. John Kennedy, Martinboro. — A Creole is a person born in the West Indies, and also, strictly speaking, one born in America, from European ancestors. The term does not imply any admixture of negro blood. The term Creole Negro is used in the British West, lndieß to distinguish negroes born there from those who during the continuance of the slave trade were brought from Africa. E. T. Edwards. — There never was any doubt as to Butler's being shipped to Bio. We were aware of the fact at the time, although we did not mention it until sufficient time had elapsed for his landing at Bio without any suspicion of his identity existing. It was a most wise proceeding on the part of the authorities to send him to a place from which he cannot easily return, as he was a man of most violent ami vindictive character, and had vowed that he would on his release have revenge on witnesses and others who had been instrumental in procuring his conviction. These threats he would doubtless have carried into effect had he been released in the colony. "Ignoramus." — The Junior Civil Service Examination is not a pass examination , the candidates being placed in order of merit. Should a candidate not secure 34 marks (out of 100) in any subject, he is held to have failed in that subject, and the inarkß actually -secured in it do not count. The lowest number of marks which will permit of a candidate being placed on the result-list is 167, but no marks of less than one-third of the possible in any subject are allowed to count towards this.
