THE WELLINGTON GROCRRS* ASSOCIATION. HISTORY REPEATS ITSELF. TO THE PUBLIO OF WELLINGTON. ri^HE following advertisement first appeared in the Wellington Independent Newspaper (whioh paper is now incorporated with the New Zealand Timeß) on the 28th day of July, 1870-OVER TWENTY YEARS AGO. It may not be tobtbt, but it'p TRUE :— COMBINATION IN CONSTRAINT OF TKADE. In this metropolitan city rosided A grooor, oontonted small profits to *eap> And who for his fallow-man's good had dooided In future to sell all his articles ohoap. Though serving tho publio and pleasinf* thorn muoh, This gon'rous decision to some gavo offouoo ; Whose aotions to injure this grooor were euoh Ab lowyors would Bay, prov a the mauoQ I'UErENBE." Thoy ponrod ont tboir wrath 'till thoy drained every fountain, They vow'd this poor grooor should novor havopeaoo, And avalanohe - like from a lofty enow MOUNTAIN They'd orush him, and then let tho prices in-CBEABE. A quondam lieutenant was oall'd to assist them, Militiaman, ohoesomongor, grooor waß he ; Such groat combination ! who darod to roßist them, In Mr. Bead's mansion soon ohokoyd would be. They called on Borne merohanta, did all in their power To damage his name and his credit to smash, But to their dismay, in an unlucky hour, They found he'd no credit, but alwayß paid cash.. Thus foiled in their plans, their efforts all burked, Their grand machinations all ending in vapour, They asked his discharge from the plao* where he worked, Or else they'd not advertise more in the papor. Moral. Now think ovor this, and do nought on the sly; Be ready to help and to oomfort your neighbour ; Oo unto others as you'd be done by, And fortune will prove the reward of your labour. The publio will see by the abovo the amount of intimidation attempted twenty years ago, the advertiser being employed at that time on tho staff of the Independent newspaper. Tho intimidation now threatened to tho same firm is, unless they join the said Association, tho merchants will not be allowed to supply them with gcods, although they are prepared to pay them cash for the same, and , if they attempt to import their own goods they will not be allowed to land them. If tho publio of Wellington are content with this arrangement, wo are : having fought tho part of the people for the last twenty years, we are now propared to bow to the decision of tho publio. ' W.
