Samuel Cox, a restaurant-keeper, was fined £2 and costs, with the alternative of 14 days' imprisonment, at the Police Court today, for having sold beer without a license. A motion by Mr. Atkin, submitted to the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, that the maternity ward at tho Refuge be closed on the Ist of May next, was rejected. This Dat. The city valuations Bhow a decrease of £15.658 for the year. The Anglican Church meetings are generallj favourable to the new pension scheme recently drafted. Gisborne, 21st January. Dr. Storer, an Australian mining expert of some note, who had been sent to this district to report upon the oil industry and indications by some capitalists in Sydney, has returned here. He notifies that his report would be most favourable. H. M. Brandon, alias Monteith, for passing a number of valueless cheques, was sentenced to eight months' imprisonment. Mr. Brabant, at present the Resident Magistrate for Tauranga, is to receive the appointment as Resident Native Land Court Judge here. Wanganui, 21st January. Harvest has commenced in this district. Barley and wheat are looking well; oats also promise a large yield. Oamaru, 21st January. At tho meeting of the Harbour Board today the secretary read a statement showing that the revenue of the harbour had increased since 1886 nearly £2000, andjttie expenditure had decreased. A movement is on foot here to send to Dr. Barnardo's Home for destitute Children in London 100 frozen sheep, the Shaw-Savill Company agreeing to carry tho same at half rates. Large promises of support have been received, and a committee has been appo nted to carry out the proposal. Greymouth, 21st January. The tenders for the South breakwater completion contraot were dealt with tonight. Hnngerford and M'Kay, the contractors for the North Harbour works, were the lowest tenderers (£5860 10a 8d). The five tenders were all from local men, the next lowest being £1900 over Hungerford and M'Kay's. The only outside tenderer was D. K. Grendon, of Dunedin, with £15,912 15s. Hungerford and M'Kay's tender was accepted. Napier, 21st January. A man named John'fmith was to-day charged with an attempted rape on a woman aged 60. He was taken in tho act. He stands romanded. Christchurch, 2lst January. The Sydenham Borough Counoil to-night approved a scheme providing that the Council should become insurers of property in the borough against fire, and decided to petition Parliament for an Act to givo them the necessary power. _ The butchers' libel caso will probably last another diy. The evidence so far goes to show that some of the frozen meat purchased by Rosewaine atter the fire and Bold in town was excellent, but part was discoloured and tainted with smoke. It does not appear that the sale was injuriously affected by the advertisements, which, by many of those concerned was regarded aa a joke. The first advertisement was written by Mr. Aherne, at the request of several butchers, who expressed approval of it after it appeared. Tho second was written by him on his own responsibility. He understood the butchers would pay for it, which they did not object to do. One of them approved it after it had been published. Feilding, This Dat. R. T. Price, charged with larceny, was yesterday committed for trial at the next sitting of the Supreme Court in Wellington. Feilding is deserted to-day. Palmerston North, This Dat. Beautiful weather to-day for the holiday. About 300 left for the Foxton raoes. Dunedin, This Dat. The death of Dr. Wauless is announced. A telegram from Mr. Beal, C.E., announces tho successful starting of the new dredger on Sew Hoy's claim, in the Arrow River. Tho prospects aro reported to bo excellent.
