Sporting. WELLINGTON RACING CLUB SPRING MEETING.

The othornho fino wcathor at the Unit Park yesterday wa,3 marred by the high wind and tho dnst which it raised. Tho atter.dano» was rather larger than oxpoclcl, roaohing as many as 750 towards the middle of the afternoon. Tho soaroity of ladies, the absenco of a band, and the walk-ov;-r which took placo for tho Hack Hurdle Race made the proceedings rather slow, bnt the rnoin? generally was good, some of tho finishes being very oloso. The public gauged tbo roiult-i protty aeonr.itety, a::d there wr >■<; no big dividends, that paid over in the Ma'don Hack Haoo (£5 8<) being tho larg. si Tae luncheon in the prand stand, though plentiful and of good quality, was spoilt by faults in tho cooking and serving. Inspector Thomson and a body of police were present, but the crowd was so orderly that we did not hear of a single iastanco in whioh their services were required. Mr. George Hunter's stable was in good form : his boautif ul mare Whispor won the two Bhort races, and Lenore ran third for tho big money, whicli was appropriated by the top weight, Strenuous, after a oapital race with Littlo Scrub. For the Hurdle Raoe Clyde was a strong "tip, among the clever division, while Kangaroo was tha popular favourite. The last-named, however, run last all the way, apparently boing unable to pace it with the weight, while Clyde oonld only get sooond to the n3 jful Orlando, who won a raoe here at tho kit meeting held on the course. Tho Haok Hurdle Race was so hedgod about with conditions that it resulted in a walk-over, at whioh, of course, the public ware disgusted. A good field, on the other hand came out for the Maiden Hack Race, and throo or four were in it to within a few yards of tho finish. Tho Soiling Raoe waß won by the favourite Rimu, whole name onriously enough had been accidentally omitted from all the published Hats of tho entries. The horso, it appears, was duly entered, but tho sooretary overlooked his nomination on making ont the lists. Mr. Graoe was very snooessful ai starter, the best send-off being in the Selling Race and tho worst in the Maidon Hacks, in whioh the fault was with the riders more than with tho starter. The other officials all worked hard. The course was not in such good condition as it looked, and Bevoral of the owners complained of the troaohoronß nature of the going on the far side, especially at the place where the acoident happened to Rifle. The following are the details of tho later events :— Hurdlo Handioap, of 40 soys. Second horse to rooeive 5 soys from the stake. About two miles. Mr. A. G. At the fall of the flag Smooth jumped away in front, and out out tho running two lengths ahead of Strenuons and Littlo Sorub, with Lonoro last. This order was maintained for half tho dißtanoo, when tho lot olosed up. As they approaohed the road turn Smooth dropped baok beaten, and Strenuous and Scrub leaving Lenoro oame into tho straight hend and bead. Mr. Hill'a horse, who had the inside running, got slightly the best of tho run home, a protty raoe ending in the grey boing beuton by a quartor of a length, Lonoro four lengths away third, and Smooth last. Giriri and Fabrication aamo up to tho leader one after tho other nndor tho hill, bnt Giriri Boon fell away, and iho other two oame on togethor. In the straight they left the others, and a good race home resulted in Rimn oatohing the judge's oyo first by a nook, Sylph, four lengths away, third, and the others stretched out. Time, 2min 930 c.
