THAT POOR RATE.
TO THE EDITOB. Sir— At the late meeting the Mayor is reported to have said that out of the adult population of 6000 or 7000 only 2500 would bo asked to pay by a system of rating. Now, sir, this is, in my opinion, leading peoplo on tho wrong scent. The Mayor knows as well as any man this is a wrong statement. May be he only alludes to those who pay their rates direct, and not to an unfortnnato person like myself, who have to pay my landlord at least double tho amount, or nearly so, what the rate cornea to. Is Mr. Brown (beg your pardon, his Worship) aware that there are in this city landlords who are already, on the plea of having td pay the rate, raising the rents of their shantios, misnamed houses. One instance that has come to my knowledge: a house that was let at J636 Bs, is now raised to £11 12s, a difference of 2s per week for 52 weoks ; will it pay a rate of 3d in the £ ? ' Now, sir, I contond that if a rate is struck, let it be done fair and honest ; go direct to the householder and not the landlord, or the tenant will have donble to pay, and the old adage will become more true, the rich will become richer and the poor who have plenty to do to live will be poorer. I am, Ac, A Poor Tenant.
