AUSTRALIA. The steamer Australia, tbo latest addition to the Union Steam Bhip Cb.'s fleet, arrived in "Wellington at 4 this norning, having left Dunedin at 12 SO p.m. on Sunday. She was purchased by the Union Co. Inst month, having previously been running in the trado between Melbourne and the north-west coast of Tasmania. The Australia is a twin-screw ntcamer, built of mild steel by Burrvll & Sons, of Dumber t ton, in April, 1884, under special survey. He.< • dimensions are, length 150 ft 4in, beam 26ft lin, anJ depth of hold Bft 9in. She is built in four compartmonta, with water-tight bulkheads, and was engincd by M. Po,ul & Co., of Dumbarton. Her engines are compound surface-condensing, with four cylinders, the cylinder* being respectively 16in and'SOin, with a length of stroke of '22in, the boiler pressure being 80lb to the square inch. She has ample accommodation for passengers, carrying 82 ■aloon and 21 steerage. The Au-strnliv is schoonprrigged, and has good deck space. She appears to h,avc been faithfully constructed, and should prove a very serviceable boat for tho trade riic is intended for via., between Wellington and Auckland via coastal ports. Her officers are— H, Johneon (late of Wanalw), master ; T. Butter (formerly of w«ihl), mate ; — Shepherd, second mate ; H. C. Seigel, purser ; W.
