Several parties started yesterday to in* j spect the immediate * scene of the volcano, Stewart's party having gone round by the south, Warbrick's' oyxhe direct rotite from Wairoa, and Mitchell's party also by the south. ' Akdy (S£ra.i Robert' Graham, of Auckland) accompanied the latter party, and she bravely rode across the devastated region as far as the horses could well go, and then travelled on foot to within a short distance of the old site of Rotomahanft, for the lake of that name is no more, and its place ib a raised plain of Band, pumiqßJand dust, in which numerous geysersj ♦owun, flames,' '(tad black- mud are . inning continually. The Pink Terrace is occupied by. a' great mud geyser,' and the -noble (White Terrace is obliterated and gone. Lake Tarawera appeared quite r frea'i from clouds or steam, and Te ArUri was easily approachable by boat, but the' Unfortunate inhabitants around that lake must all have daysato btoen suffocated inithe du»t imdciirad -which covers the whole of that region. - The njquntain range of -Wahangft, Buawahia, and' Tarawera frowned preternaturally over thes rßcene,'iheirr Bcene,'iheir iideß Taredfin-white dust, and only a little smoke and. steam issuing from the summit.'
