MASTERTON TOWN LANDS TRUST.
? TO THE EDITOR. Sir— ln your iusuo of yesterday I obnorve that an application was made to tho School Commissioners of tho district, by tho Mastorton Town Lands 'I'rnstoon. to have conveyed to thorn 10 acres of section 104, Masterton, as provided by tho Special Powors and Contracts Act of 1885. From what I can loam, some portion of tho land belonging to the settlers was orronoously n HA in 1864 to Mr. RhodoH; that the error was referred to the Hon. tho Minister of Lands, who investigated the matter, and in his wisdom brought the claim of tho settlers into tho Act of 1885 for adjustment. The Aot, I boliove, providos that an equivalent of Crown lands for primary education shall be set upart iv lieu of tho 10 acres which the trustees olaim and aro now desirous of ob- f taining for recreation purposes for the settlers But I hear that an oooontric member of the Board of Commissionorsappoarsto bo heaping up obstacles in the way, so as to prevent tho ftottlomont of the error as provided by the Act. Surely, sir, with tlio large endowments already provided for education, and with a comfortablo stipend of about .£400,000 annually, this ocoontrio gontlomon should not fancy that tho oducation of our young people would bo materially injured if the ten aores of section 104 wore conveyed to the people of Mastorton. It was always undorstood that this sootion was reserved for tho settlors. I cannot find out in any of tho schedules of the Education Acts of its being taken and appropriated for oducational purposes. How have tho Commissioners, therefore, got pos- , session ? If by an Order in Council, I do'voutly hopo that the Hon. Mr. Ballanoo will noo his way to havo tho order canoolled, and . the soction restored to the sottlors for whom it was originally intended, or in room of the error committed in 1864 by tho Govornmont. I am, &c, Masterton Settler.
