(Per Press Agency.) TIMARU. 4th December.

The libel case against the proprietor of the South Canterbury Times was brought on at the Resident Magistrate's Court to-day, before Mr. Woolcombe, R.M., and Mr. Beswick, J.P. Mr. White appeared for Judge Ward, and Mr. Ormsby for Mr. Ball. Mr. Ormsby applied for a remand on the ground that he had not had time to get up his case. Mr. White objected, and said the proper place to ask for a remand was the Supreme Court. The Bench ultimately granted the remand till Monday next. Strenuous efforts are being made to prevent the raising of a £40,000 loan to obtain a water supply. A plebiscitum of ratepayers is to be taken. The long-continued scarcity of water it is thought will make many vote ia favor of the scheme.
