AUSTRALIAN SUMMARY. (PER ALBION AT HOKITIKA.) MELBOURNE. 27th November.

There has been but little political action during the past week. The House only sat on two days, but there has been a good deal of speculation upon the acts and intentions of the Government. — A sum for the payment • of members now actually appears on the Estimates, ' and as the Appropriation Bill will be laid aside by the Council, the Assembly will adjourn for six months^ and then fnrther adjourn from time to time ; for so long as the present sessibn of Parliament continues, so long does the pay- ' ment of members remain the law of the land — the last act having been enacted to remain in operation for the whole of last Parliament, and during the first session of this. — The Ports and Armaments Bill, embodying tho whole of Sir W. Jervois scheme of defence, involving an outlay of £350,000, is to be laid aside by the Council, because it contained a free gift preamble. — The Governor has been somewhat taken to task for the part he has played in regard to the payment of members ; but he prides himself upon acting as a Constitutional Governor, while Berry has declared that the Government are determined to carry out the clearly expressed will of the people. — The flagship Wolverene shortly leaves for Sydney, thence to Now Zealand. — The Soldene Company have been playing to crowded houses. They open in Dunedin about Christmas. — A young man, named Samuel Odell. receiving £150 a year, having embezzled £200 of his employer's money, committed suicide by drpwning. He had lost the money at the last races.
