object in view. We understand the result of the entertainment will leave something like £5 or £6 for the Church fund. The first of six competitions for the City Rifle challenge medal and other prizes, took place on Saturday afternoon, at the Polhill Gully rifle range, in the presence of a large number of ladies and gentlemen. Among those present was Major Lockett, District Commander, who took a great deal of interest in the firing. The competitors were in charge of Captain Crowe. The distances were 200, 400, 500 and 600 yards, with 5 shots at each distance. The weather being all that could have been desired, the result was that the shooting was splendid throughout. After a very close and exciting contest from first to last, Private Kebblewhite headed the list with the splendid score of 64 points, which entitles him to hold the medal for one month. The next four highest scores were — Sergt. G. Harris, 63 points ; Private C. Cording, 61 points ; Capt. Crowe, 61 points ; Private M'lntosh, 01 points; all the others being close up. Mr. G. H. Bayliss will meet the electors of Cook Ward at the New Town Hotel on Tuesday, and at the Cjty Hotel on Wednesday. The lecture of Mr. Button, M.H.R., on oxygen, will be given this evening in the Congregational Church, Woodward-street. As the lecturer will illustrate his subject by experiments, a pleasant evening's entertainment may be anticipated. The following letter has been handed to us by Captain Moss for publication: — "Sydneystreet, 10th September, 1877. Captain Moss, Central Fire Brigade. Dear Sir— As a small acknowledgment of the service of your brigade and yourself at the late fire, I beg to enclose cheque for £5 55., to be divided amongst the brigade as you think proper. — Yours, &c, Robert Lambert." Telegraphic communication between Wellington and the West Coast of the South Island was interrupted this morning, doubtless from the effects of the southerly gale on the telegraph posts and wires. A robbery was committed at the store of Mr. Burt, Upper Hutt, between six and nine o'clock last evening. The store was forcibly entered during the absence of the inmates, and property to the amount of £9 stolen. A man named Alexander Wilson was arrested by Constable Lyster within a quarter of an hour from the time the robbery was reported, actually wearing some of the clothing stolen. He was brought into town this afternoon, brought before Mr. Wardell, R.M., and remanded until Friday. A meeting of the creditors in the estate of Arthur Meek was .held to-day, Mr. C. M'lntyre in the chair. The debts were stated at about £150; assets, £25. The creditors agreed to take £2 per month, Mr. M'lntyre being appointed trustee. The quarterly meeting of the Wellington Typographical Society was held on Saturday evening, when Mr. M'lntosh was elected Vice-President. The report and balance-sheet were submitted and adopted, the latter showing that the financial affairs of the Society were altogether in a prosperous condition. Mr. George Thoma9 will sell by auction, at his rooms (late G. H. Vennell's), to-morrow, a large quantity of general merchandise. Messrs. Beauchamp, Campbell and Co. hold a sale of colonial produce at their rooms tomorrow. Mr. R. J. Duncan holds an important auction sale at his rooms to-morrow of 70 acres freehold land in Carterton, together with one six-roomed house and a two-roomed house erected thereon. Among the Perils to which the unhealthy are liable is the danger of injury from rascally imitations and worthless competitors of standard medicines. So familiar, however, is the public with Udolpho Wolfe's Schiedam Aromatic Schnapps, that it is certain that bogus imitations and poisonous importations continually put forward to supplant it will dofar less harm than might otherwise be anticipated. — Advt.
