DUNEDIN. Bth June.
A publican was sued to-day by a representative of the Good Templars for supplying an intoxicated man with liquor. The case was dismissed. In a case of vagrancy this morning, at the* Police Court, Mr. Pyke,-the presiding magis--trate, intimated the intention of the Bench to 1 carry out strictly the terms of the Act, thus throwing the onus of proof on defendant as to how a living was obtained. A woman so" charged, though producing a bank-book showing considerable funds to her credit, was convicted and sentenced. At the meeting of the Chamber Commerce to-day the annual report was read, also a ( voluminous report from the committee appointed to report upon the existing bankruptcy law. In their general recommendations they recommend strongly that a special Act should be passed validating. all past proceedings under the Debtors and Creditors Act, 1875, in so far as they are rendered doubtful by conflict between the Act and the rules of court, or by ambiguities existing. They also recommend the Chamber to pointedly urge upon the Government that evidence of experienced per- ' sons should be taken before a select committee of Parliament before an amending Act is passed, and that such evidence should also be obtained for the information of the Governor in Council before the amendments of the rules of court are passed.
