THE WELLINGTON GAOL.
The following was the state of the Wellington gaol on the 31st December, IS75 :— * Males. Females. Under sentence, penal servitude 12 1 Under sentence, hard labor ... 27 10 Under sentence, without hard labor ... 3 2 Awaiting trial, Supreme Conrt 2 0 Detained on remand ... 3 0 Total 47 13 The total number of committals for the year has been 530, comprising 436 males and 94 females This shows a decrease in the number of male prisoners of*3l, aud an incease of 35 in the number of females, as compared with the previous year, when the numbers were, males 457 ; feni-sl's 59, | Total 526. It is a gratifying fact that notwithstanding the large increase of population there has been only an increase of four in the total number of committals daring the past ye*r.
