Sedgemere Harvest Home social has been fixed for Thursday, April 4.

Friday.. March 15, is the date chosen for the annual St. Patrick's ball, to be held at Leeston Town Hall. ' A week ago the level of Lake Ellesmere at Taumutu, with a horth-easterly wind blowing, was 12 inches above zero.

Euchre and dance social conducted by the Doyleston Hall Committee will be held in the hall as usual on Saturday evening.

At Killinchy on Monday, March 11, the N.Z. Farmers* Co-op., Association will hold a clearing sale for Mr E. Martin, whose lease has expired. Details will be advertised later.

The greater portion of the wheat harvest from this district has now reached Store either locally or at Christchurch. Favourable conditions in the harvest fields were followed by prompt dispatch to the railway. There has been no shortage of trucks this season and the grain was quickly and efficiently dispatched to store. There is still a good deal of barley to be handled by the transport organisations.

Ellesmere County Cuncil notifies that registrations of dogs for 1940 has been again postponed by the Government until April Ist next. This has been brought about by the late arrival of the remedy for hydatids which is distributed when the dogs are registered.

At Leeston stock sale on Friday, March 8, Messrs H. Matson and Co. will offer by auction several Southbridge properties in the estate of the late Mr M. Riordan.

Next Thursday will be the last day on which Springs County ratepayers may pay their rates for the current year without the ten per cent penalty.

A very pleasant evening was spent at The Vicarage, Leeston, when Mrs Hanna and the senior Bible Class girls entertained Miss Maisie Amyes on the occasion of her approaching marriage. Games and competitions were enjoyed, the winners being Misses Amyes, Linda and Jean Coe. After supper Mrs Hanna asked the guest of the evening to accept a picture with every good wish from herself and the Bible Class. The singing of Auld Lang Syne brought a most enjoyable eve-iing to a close. ThoSe present included Mesdames Hanna ahd Duff, Misses Maisie Amyes, Sadie Bryce, Linda, Elaine and Jean Coe, Connie Cook, Doris Fussell, Elizabeth Stephens and Nancy Rowley.

Miss Iris Manson, whose marriage takes place this week-end was the guest of honour at a dance and social giveh last night by her friends in the Parish Hall. Mr R. Duff supplied the music for many enjoyable dances, while Mr Keith Roxborough acted as M.C. Miss Manson was presented with a posy by Miss M. Turner on entering the hall while those present sang "For She's a Jolly Good Fellow." Extras were played by Miss P. Bray and Miss Lacey. The Monte Carlo was won by Miss Gwen Howson and Mr K. Roxborough. After supper, Miss Manson was called upon to open the many useful gifts given by her friends, for which Mr Tui Jones thanked all on her behalf. The happy evening was brought to a close by the singing of Atzld Lang Syne.
