PEEPS INTO THE PAST

FORTY-FIVE YEARS AGO.

EXTRACTS FROM THE "ELLESMERE GUARDIAN."

Saturday, August 13, 1334

A fall of snow occurred in the ElleSmere district on August 16, and the weather was very changeable.

The New Zealand dairy expert in London in his report to the Government advised that there was an excellent opportunity for a good business to be established in the export of frozen chickens and ducks to the London market.

" Wednesday, August 22, 1894 Mr McLachlan, M.H.R., says the people of the Ellesmere district never require charitable aid. He explains it by saying that they live simply, and only have a circus amongst them once in seven years. The Lake County Press (Arrowtown, Otago) reported a wonderful second growth of fruit in the lake district. Large apples were taken from trees in many orchards, cherry plums of full size and a bright red colour had been picked and a bunch of large red currants was also gathered. , ♦ ♦ Rev. A. C. Lawry presided over a meeting of the trustees of the Doyleston Wesleyan Sunday School. Through the generosity of a friend a site of about a quarter of an acre in Drain road had been given for a building. Tenders were to be called for the erection of a building. A football match took place at Leeston between Ellesmere and Hokitika, the attendance being estimated at 450. The visitors won by 18 to nil. The Ellesmere team averaged a fraction over list 41bs and was as follows: —Graham, Cardale, P. Marshall, J. Marshall, Hogg, Rennie, Telford,* Irvine, Scott, Holly, McMillan, Moorhead, Bourne, Wills, and Young.

A machine called the "Inaminate Bird Flyer," patended by Mr Whitney, of Auckland, was tested in that city. It was used for throwing earthenware discs as substitute for pigeons in shooting competitions. The machine was used behind a screen and the discs could be sent in any direction desired and at any elevation.
