YOUNG FARMERS

ANNUAL MEETING OF ELLES-

MERE CLUB

There was a good attendance at the annual meeting of the Ellesmere Young Farmers' Club, which was held at Leeston last night, Mr H. G Stephens presiding. The secretary, Mr C. Tod, in presenting the annual report reviewed the year's activities. The attendances at meetings were fairly good, although inclined to fall off towards the end of the year. A series of lectures on various subjects of interest to farmers took place during the season, and there were also inCerclub visits and sports fixtures with the Darfield Club, which were most enjoyable. The treasurer, Mr Hurford, reported that the receipts totalled £19/0/7 and the expenditure £15/5/9, leaving a credit of £3/14/10. There were in addition fees outstanding to the amount of £2/0/3. In moving the adoption of tlje reports, the chairman urged that members should take more interest in the club especially towards the end of the year. He emphasised the value of the movement and suggested that the committee should consider some way of stimulating and sustaining interest. He suggested that Mr Freeman, the Dominion organiser, should be invited to attend a club meeting. He thought the impromptu speech evening a good one and that this part of the club's activities should be encouraged. The field day at the Agronomy Division was disappointing so far as the attendance of members was concerned. An effort should be made to hold the inter-club debate with Darfield early in the season. Officials elected for the year were: Advisory president, Mr G. W. R. Osborne; chairman, Mr L. C. Coe; secretary, Mr H. D. Hurford; treasurer, Mr G. McClure; executive, Messrs H. G. Stephens, M. Scott, L. McCloy, and K. McGill; delegates to annual meeting of district committee. J chairman and secretary; delegate to executive of the district committee, the chairman. In vacating the chair, Mr Stephens wished the club every success under the chairmanship of Mr Coe, and he was sure it would do well under his guidance. Mr Osborne remarked that It had been said that members would get out of the club just what they put into it, but he thought that they really received more, for there was valuable material given in the lectures that very few adults had the opportunity of hearing. He suggested that more members should be obtained, so as to widen the benefits derived from the club. The last Monday in each month was selected for club meetings and arrangements for supper as for last year were agreed to. While the club dance was a success socially it was not so financially, but members decided that it was desirable to continue the fixture. The committee, together with Messrs C. Tod, G. McLachlan, and G. Ren'nie were appointed a dance committee. June 22 was the date recommended for the dance, or if this were not available, a date as near as possible to that time. Among suggestions for the year's programme was one to obtain a screening of motion pictures by the Department of Agriculture; also an address on conditions in the early days in the district. Hearty votes of thanksVere passed to Mr Osborne for his interest in the club, to the A. and P. Association for free use of room, to The Guardian, and to all others who had in anyway assisted the club during the year. A special vote was accorded to the retiring chairman, Mr Stephens, for his enthusiastic work for the club since j its formation. A vote of thanks was! also passed to the retiring secretary, Mr Tod.
