Southbridge
MOTHERS' UNION Prior to the annual meeting of the Southbridge branch of tfie Mothers' Union, a service was held in St. James's v Church by the Rev. G. L. Harold. At the meeting Mrs Harold presided and Deaconess SpencerSmith, of Christehurch, gave an address on Bible reading in the home and on the Church's forward movement, for which she was thanked. Officers elected were:—Enrolling member, Mrs Harold; vice-presidents, Mesdames Beamsley, sen., C. Lewton, A. G. Thompson, and R. F. Pilkington; secretary, Mrs H. J. Greenwood; committee, Mesdames A. J. Beamsley, R. B. Willis, W. Millar, A. J. Inwood, D. Paterson, and W. BrearS. References were made to the work of Mrs Greenwood who is beginning her tenth year as secretary. She was warmly thanked. Afternoon tea was served by Mesdames Taylor, Greenwood, and D. W. Hayes. HARVEST FESTIVAL, There were good congregations at the Southbridge Presbyterian Church on Sunday when harvest thanksgiving services were held. A harvest musical festival was held in the morning, when Mr Couch conducted the choir and the Rev. L. G. B. Whitehead took as his subject, "Fruit-bearing." Mr R. G. Bishop took the evening service. The church was nicely decorated with harvest offerings. PERSONAL, ' Mr and Mrs J. Yeoman, Coalgate, have been visiting friends at South- ! bridge. Miss Eileen Kemp, Lyttelton, is on a holiday visit to friends at SouthI bridge. Mr W. Hannah, North Canterbury, is visiting relatives in Southbridge. > Mrs W. J. Palmer has returned to Rakaia Huts after a lengthy holiday spent in Otago.
