ANNUAL OUTING

SCHOOLS AND FRIENDLY

SOCIETIES

SATURDAY'S EXCURSION TO

STEWART'S GULLY

The excursion of the schools in the vicinity of Leeston and the district friendly societies has now become one of the popular outings of the year. It was held on Saturday at Stewart's Gully, a picnic resort on the banks of the Waimakariri river. A special train was provided, and when the last passengers were picked up further down the line, the complement was between 350 and 360. The committee in charge of the excursion had made ample provision for needs of the children, while hot water and milk were made available at the picnic ground. Full use was made of the facilities for games at the ground. Teams were selected and an enjoyable cricket match was played on a good pitch, where ample outfield had been provided. There was also a rounders match organised and this also provoked keen competition, Mr D. H. Reid's team winning on the last ball of the day. There were swings, see-saws and a golf course, all of which received good patronage, while the races were run on a good track provided for this purpose. The presence of the Ellesmere Brass Band was much appreciated and a fine selection of band items was provided during the day. Altogether the picnic was a thoroughly enjoyable one.

The results of the races were:—
