The Ellesmere County Council is inviting tenders for drain cleaning.

On account of the Ellesmere Gun Club's duck dinner having been fixed for to-morrow" evening, the Sedgemere Hall Committee has arranged to hold its next euchre and dance social on Monday. On Tuesday evening, in the anteroom of the Southbridge Town Hall, the local sub-branch of the Returned Soldiers' Association will hold its fortnightly euchre social, and it will be the last one to count for the aggregate. After spreading sodium chlorate on his farm at Aria, Te Kuiti, Carl Albert Johansen, without changing his clothes, went on to burn fern in an adjoining paddock. Suddenly his clothes burst into flames. Johansen was admitted to hospital in a serious condition with burns and shock. The annual meeting of the Ellesmere A. and P. Association is to be, held at Leeston this evening. Dr. I. W. Weston and Mr C. Mclntosh are to give interesting talks on the association's better farming competition, and Mr A. Leslie is to speak on matters of interest to all farmers. All members of the association should endeavour to be present. A kitchen evening, arranged by the spinsters and bachelors of Sedgemere, will be held on Thursday next, May 23, in the Sedgemere Hall, in I honour of Miss M. Patterson, whose marriage takes place shortly. Miss I Patterson enjoys a great deal of ; popularity and her many friends j throughout the district are invited to attend the evening. Owing to May 6 being so wet and stormy, the six-a-side women's hockey tournament in Christchurch, (arranged for that day, could not be held. - This tournament will now take place on June 3, beginning at nine o'clock, so as to enable the girls to see the match with the Indians in the afternoon. The Wakaipa Basketball Club has decided to hold a big dance in the Springston South Hall on Tuesday evening next, May 21, for which the services of Mr Fred Smith's Orchestra have been secured. The hail is one of the largest in the district, the I floor is in exceptionally good order, and an attractive programme includes a Monte Carlo dance for a prize of 10/6. The members of the club promise a first-class supper, yet the admission charges are only 1/6 and 2/-. Miss Sylvia Kimber, the secretary, hopes to see a large number of Springs and Ellesmere folk present. To-morrow will be one of the important days of the year for the Eilesmere Gun Club. During the afternoon it will hold a pigeon match for a stake of £50, open to all the clubs affiliated to the New Zealand Gun Clubs' Association. The event is expected to attract competitors from many parts of Canterbury. At 5.30 in the evening a unique function so far as gun clubs in the Dominion are concerned will be held at the Lakeside Hall. This is the annual duck dinner. As in previous years, arrangements have been made for a j visit from a strong concert party comprising some of the best performers in Christchurch. A splendid evening's enjoyment is assured.
