CORRESPONDENCE
To The Editor, Sir, - From the reports in the news papers it would seem that the Police are making a round up of bookmakers throughout New 'Zealand. Why on earth the Government does not legalise the “Knight of the pencil” is beyond me. Do those in authority fail to realise that what an enormous amount of revenue would result if registration, with its accompanying substantial fee, was made compulsory? Or is it that they arc afraid of offending a certain section of the community, and thereby losing a few votes. One thing is certain, however, and that is that there is a very strong feeling throughout the country to have legislation passed to enable people to have a bet without breaking the law. The position regarding the legalised totalisator is also' absurd in that one cannot utilise the services of the Telegraph Dept, to make an investment. If it were made possible for (hi", to be done and it certainly should be, 'there would be a tremendous additional revenue, while the evil of the bookmaker would soon disappear. I am, etc-. . A Punter.
